Liir's sexuality
Why am I doing this post? Because I like to think about all the aspects of my character and while I don't feel I have to 'prove' my character choices, I've always thought that a detailed explanation serves for a deeper understanding. Hence, this post and some of the others.

Point One: Liir is mostly uninterested.

Much like his mother, there's far too much going on upstairs for him to really be all that interested in someone in that way. There are better things to do.

In another sense, he has no basis for even an understanding of that kind of thing. His only companions as children were his half-siblings and as such, no relationship like that could ever have even begun to start. Following that, he was stuck alone with two spinsters and not allowed out much. While he did spend time with the soldiers down at Red Windmill, none of them would have been bawdy with them because he would usually come running up to tell Elphaba anything important and naughtiness is always important to a kid.

Lastly, he has no real sexually aesthetic scale. He doesn't know what would be considered pretty or handsome and it's never played much of a role in his life. He lived with two crazy old women (one of which didn't much care what he did or looked like) and a bunch of winged monkeys. And the monkeys still flung poo. If he was a puppy, you'd say he hadn't been socialized.

Point Two: Liir doesn't think he's attractive.

He is. It's a point made in the book numerous times, between Trism hitting on him just about every time they meet to the fact that he was picked to work as an honor guard (and you know what they base that on). He's handsome, if a little severe looking, with extremely green eyes and when he's fed regularly, gets to be rather athletically inclined. If you go for that kind of thing, he is not hard on the eyes.

That said? He will never realize it, nor will he understand the idea of being 'attractive' to anyone. It just doesn't work in his head. For one thing, he was a rather chubby child and that was mocked right into his psyche. For another, he was treated very much like another of the winged monkeys, and so tends to see himself as very average in all respects, if not slightly behind.

Point Three: Liir is bisexual, but with a stronger attraction towards men.

While Liir's first sexual experience was female, it was not by his choice. He spent years in the Home Guard and unlike just about every other soldier, never picked up a girlfriend or a local wife when they were stationed in Quadling Country. That said, when presented with Candle, he felt an attraction (thought her beautiful) but nothing that he was willing to act upon in any way (even so far as touching her).

In the case of Trism, however, Liir felt the need to (canonically, mind) hold Trism's bare buttocks to keep him from falling off of a ledge. And when Trism finally did pounce him for sex, Liir was all to happy to go along with it. He also turned into a cuddler with Trism, sleeping wrapped up in the other man and pulling him back to bed to (for all intents and purposes) snuggle. Even after he'd learned that he'd had sex with Candle, he never showed that kind of interest or physical comfort with Candle despite the fact that he loved her.

That said, he did 'fall in love' with Dorothy upon seeing her and she was his first kiss by his choice. So it's a mixed bag.

What does this mean for practical play purposes?

...Liir's mostly gay, but that doesn't mean he won't fall for a girl. That said, his mind is on his work and not so much on relationshippyness, though this will more than likely change as he gets more comfortable. Also, if you hit on him? He's totally not going to notice. In canon, it took Trism ten years (and blatantly pouncing him) for Liir to get the point. He's a little thick in that area.
